Fill Flash Outside

Fill flash outside means to expose a subject where it lacks sunlight or other lights. The fill flash also eliminates shadows from pictures and can also be used for landscape photography. By using fill flash, it makes your portraits look more natural and even out colors of your subject. You can also dial down your flash for example having 30% flash and 70% natural light. To use fill flash the subject would have to be farther away from the actual flash to get a good photo.

External Flash

  1. You would use external flash when your setting is dark.
  2. You need to meter the flash so then you can get a good exposer.
  3. It syncs your flash and your shutter speed.
  4. ETTL means Evaluative through the lens.
  5. When you shoot faster than the camera sync speed you get half of the picture visible, and the other half is dark.
  6. Photographers use a diffuser and bounce the flash so that the light gets softer.
  7. A slave is a flash unit that will flash when another flash unit has an output.
  8. When your photo is too dark the exposure needs to be opened more and when the photo is too light the exposure needs to be closed more.

Studio Portraits with Gel Lights

Wallpaper : colorful, women, model, portrait, Asian, photography, blue, Canon, backlighting ...

This studio portrait that has strobe lighting is really good. The light catches her face perfectly which shows her features. Her personality might be calm and reassuring because of her facial expression. They might have rearranged the lights by facing them in front of her and one lightly dimed behind her. The background also compliments the lighting used to get this affect.

What every beginner needs to know

  1. Setting the exposer: Using the histogram and by learning how to read it will give you the best exposer.
  2. RAW: Shooting in RAW will give you all the capabilities in your camera.
  3. Selecting focusing points manually: Improves focusing accurately and lessens the chance of missing great shots.
  4. Learning all AF modes: there are different types of AF modes and each of them are used for different things.
  5. Aperture Priority: having control over depth of field.
  6. Shutter Priority: Gives control over the shutter speed.
  7. Control motion blur: Gives control over the shutter speed and learning what the slowest speed you shoot with.
  8. Manual white balance: Used for certain light situations.
  9. Drive Modes: Three types of modes for modeling, sports and studio work.
  10. Metering modes: Depending on the camera manufacture they have different names but share the same purpose.
  11. ISO: Using a higher ISO for working with less light and using a lower ISO for more lighting.
  12. Auto-ISO: manually change the ISO depending on the shoot.
  13. Exposure: A -/+ setting on your camera will increase or decrease the exposure on your camera.
  14. Manual exposure: Manually change your settings.

HDR Photography

HDR is “High Dynamic Range”, it means the range of the lightest tones and the darkest tones in a photo. How to be successful in this is by using a tripod to lessen the movement and to take at least two photos of the same scenery.

My HDR photo is a good one because I think I got all of the pictures at the right exposers. The color of the photo is vibrant and not too vibrant to the point it has a weird color. The clouds are ok due to it not having that many shadows. The clouds I added in could have been a lot better. Ways I would improve my photo would be to have a better scenery. I don’t like how it’s at an awkward angle and there’s nothing that eyes catching. The added in clouds would be better if they blended in with the same color that the other clouds are. I wish there was more shadows that fit perfectly in the picture. I would add more vibrant colors, but I think it would be too much. Overall, I think I did a good job on my first try.

Painting with light

The art of Light Painting Photography on Behance

This is a great photo showing painting with light. The path is lit up with multiple colors and it looks like it keeps on going. I think the photographer was able to capture this picture was by having a low exposure and having a long shutter speed. After taking the photo they probably went into photoshop and put the brightness up. Overall, it is a really great picture.

I like Henri Cartier Bresson’s photojournalism because he does a great job of capturing the moment. The timing of the pictures is on point because there rarely any blur to the picture. It also shows what the people in the picture are doing. The composition is good because it shows us the angle in which it was shot. The people are also in the frame of the picture. It shows us the scenery in which they are in. The ability he had to capture the moment was good. We can clearly see the children playing on the pavement. One thing is that there isn’t that much to look at. Overall, he did a great job in photo journaling.
